First Grade

  • Welcome to first grade!  We have two sections of first grade here at Hamline Elementary!  First Graders use the Reader's and Writer's workshop models in the classroom.

Reader’s Workshop includes: shared reading, guided reading, skills, and independent reading. Guided reading is provided in small instructional groups.  Students will also have access to iPads for a variety of reading and math activities.

Writer’s Workshop generates writing in the following genres: Writerly Life, Narratives, Functional, Nonfiction, and Poetry. Students write every day and focus on communication through print and writing conventions.

Responsive Classroom is used to build community with a focus on developing social skills to improve academics. We have a daily morning meeting to get to know each other through greetings, sharing and cooperative activities.

Everyday Math content focuses on problem solving, practice of basic skills, and exploration of math concepts. Daily instruction includes hands-on manipulatives and journal work. Math homework reinforces the math concepts.

Field trips occur throughout the year to integrate areas of study in the curriculum. First grade is paired with the drama department at Hamline University. This connection provides the children with an opportunity to experience the behind the scene workings of a play production.

Students receive science and art instruction from specialists in the building.  We also have a weekly music class taught by a retired music teacher.

Homework:  Every night students are expected to read a book at their independent reading level.  They should read this book to an adult in their home.
